We follow a multi-disciplinary research approach and have integrated concepts and approaches from software engineering, agile computing, decision science, artificial intelligence, knowledge management, and computational intelligence to achieve novel results in people centric computing.

Research Areas. Research areas represent the major research activities in the Department of Computer Science. Faculty and students have developed new ideas to achieve results in all aspects of the nine areas of research.

Computer Systems, Networks, and Architecture; Theory of Computer Science. Bioinformatics and Computational Biology research is also included in Graduate Area II. There is significant overlap between the two Graduate Areas, and much research lies in their intersection.

PhD and MPhil projects are available across a range of areas including Software and Systems Engineering, Computational Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering, Evolutionary Systems, Machine Learning and Computational Intelligence.

The Department welcomes applications from high quality candidates across all computer science areas. Our community of postgraduate students contributes to a range of exciting projects at the cutting-edge of current research sponsored by both the public sector, third-party and industrial scholarships.

The Center for Automation Research (CFAR) was founded in 1964 by computer vision pioneer Azriel Rosenfeld, and CFAR still houses a large and thriving computer vision community, consisting of almost a dozen faculty and roughly fifty graduate students. Research at UMD addresses every aspect of computer vision, featuring work in areas such as Face Recognition, Vision for Robotics, 3D.
